Renaldo Leaner: Free-agent South African goalkeeper linked with Kaizer Chiefs move

South African goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, currently a free agent after leaving Sekhukhune United, is being linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership.

Leaner, 28, became Without Club on 1 July 2026 following the expiry of his deal at Sekhukhune, making any potential switch to Naturena a free transfer. The rumoured move, logged on 4 July with the probability of completion listed as ?, would see Chiefs target a player whose market value has risen to around 350,000 (350k band, per Transfermarkt) after a steady climb in recent seasons.

Born in Cape Town on 12 February 1998 and standing 1.87m tall, Leaner is a right-footed specialist goalkeeper who has spent his entire career in South African football. He progressed from Ajax Cape Towns youth ranks to the senior side in 2020, then moved to Cape Town Spurs later that year before spells at Durban City and, most recently, Sekhukhune United.

While detailed match data is limited, his form at Durban City between 2022 and 2023 coincided with sharp jumps in his valuation, from 25,000 in early 2022 to 150,000 by May 2023. A subsequent move to Sekhukhune in July 2023 preceded further increases, peaking at 300,000 in June 2024 and recovering to 350,000 in June 2026 after a brief dip, suggesting consistent performances in South Africas top flight.

Leaners most recent recorded outing for Sekhukhune came in domestic competition in the 2025-26 campaign, before his release at the end of the season, leaving him available as a free agent ahead of the new term.

Should Chiefs formalise their interest, a move to one of the countrys most high-profile clubs would offer Leaner a significant stage to build on his late-career rise and further enhance his reputation in the Premiership.
