Red Bull New York Academy winger Sean Baitinger has confirmed his availability for South Africa, giving the 18-year-old a potential route into the country’s international age-group teams.
Born in Sacramento, Baitinger qualifies through his mother and maternal grandparents, who are from South Africa. He can now be considered for the national U20 and U23 squads as SAFA examines options involving dual-national players.
Baitinger joined the Red Bulls Academy in 2025 after leaving Sacramento Republic FC and has since made a significant impression at MLS NEXT Pro level.
He made his professional debut for Red Bull New York II against New York City FC II on 17 May. His breakthrough performance came on 21 June against Toronto FC II, when he scored his first professional goal and supplied two assists.
That display also earned him a place in Red Bulls history. At 17 years and 284 days, Baitinger became the youngest player in the club’s history to provide two assists in a match.
His progress continued on 8 August, when he scored twice against Columbus Crew 2. The brace made him the fourth-youngest player in Red Bulls history to score two goals in a single game, at 17 years and 331 days.
Baitinger has five goals and six assists in 19 matches across all competitions this season. He has primarily operated as a winger but has also regularly played at right-back, adding versatility to his game and giving South Africa’s age-group coaches another tactical option.
The U20 and U23 teams are possible starting points for the teenager because of his age and his current position within the Red Bulls system.
Baitinger is also eligible to represent the United States and the Philippines, through his paternal grandmother. His younger brother Ziggy, a midfielder with the Red Bulls Academy U16 side, represented the Philippines U17 team during the latest international window.
The family’s international sporting links could therefore extend across three countries, although Sean Baitinger has now made himself available to South Africa.
He has signed a one-and-a-half-year MLS NEXT Pro contract with Red Bull New York II that runs through the 2027-28 season. The agreement becomes effective on 1 January, 2027, as he continues his professional development in the United States.
