Real Madrid’s centre-back crisis leaves Mourinho short before Villarreal visit

Real Madrid are facing another serious shortage in central defence, with Jose Mourinho left with only one fully fit senior centre-back for Saturday’s meeting with Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The match is scheduled to begin at 21:00 CET, but the Portuguese coach’s defensive options have been severely reduced despite the club’s efforts to address the position in recent seasons. Real Madrid signed Ibrahima Konate and Dean Huijsen, while Asensio was promoted to the first team, yet the same problem has returned at a decisive stage of the campaign.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Antonio Rudiger is currently the only centre-back available to face Villarreal, known as the Yellow Submarine. Huijsen is suspended, while Asensio is unavailable through injury.

Fitness doubts add to Mourinho’s problems

Real Madrid’s remaining hope rests with players working their way back from injury, although neither offers a straightforward solution. Konate could be available, but his recovery from a knee injury is progressing more slowly than expected.

Eder Militao is also nearing a return after being out for more than six months. However, his involvement against Villarreal would still carry considerable risk, given the length of his absence.

That leaves Mourinho considering makeshift selections for the match. One possibility would be to turn to academy players Mario Rivas or Juan Martinez, while another would involve moving Aurelien Tchouameni into central defence.

Tchouameni has filled the position on previous occasions, and his experience there could provide the manager with an alternative if the returning defenders are not considered ready to start.

Whatever decision Mourinho makes, the situation underlines a problem that has repeatedly resurfaced at Real Madrid. Despite recruitment and the emergence of younger players, the club once again finds itself approaching a key fixture without a fully equipped central-defensive unit.
