Real Madrid’s Bastoni decision set to be revisited as Inter defender returns to the Bernabeu

Alessandro Bastoni will face Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu as an Inter Milan player, despite once being identified as Jose Mourinho’s preferred defensive signing when the Portuguese manager returned to lead the Spanish giants.

Bastoni had emerged as a target for Real Madrid, with a move to Spain potentially giving him the chance to enter the Bernabeu through the entrance reserved for the home team. Instead, the Italy international is preparing to make the journey as an opponent, wearing Inter colours for a ninth successive season.

Spanish newspaper AS described the situation as a striking twist of fate, drawing a comparison with the writing of Portuguese novelist Jose Saramago and his ideas about destiny being able to move in straight lines across crooked paths.

“The destiny of Bastoni, who will play at the Bernabeu as a rival and in an Inter Milan shirt for the ninth consecutive year, is one of those remarkable paradoxes,” the report said.

The possibility of boarding a direct flight to Spain during the current summer was a serious temptation for the defender. Bastoni was particularly high on the list of a coach who had previously guided Inter to an historic and unprecedented treble.

However, Inter’s financial demands ultimately played a decisive role. The club were unwilling to consider selling the Italian defender for less than 70m euros, making him an exception in a football world where emotion and financial considerations are increasingly difficult to separate.

Neither Bastoni nor Inter were in a hurry to end their relationship. The defender had committed to remaining at the club during celebrations after their Serie A title triumph, while Inter’s valuation reflected both his ability and his growing leadership within the team.

Bastoni accepted responsibility for pretending to have been fouled, an incident that resulted in Pierre Kalulu being sent off after receiving a second yellow card. Konate became Real Madrid’s preferred option

Bastoni’s proposed move was also affected by another decision made by Real Madrid: the signing of French defender Ibrahima Konate, one of the club’s first arrivals in the previous transfer window.

The former Liverpool defender joined on a free transfer after his contract with the Reds expired. He was expected to be part of a wider rebuild at the heart of Real Madrid’s defence, but the continued presence of Raul Asencio and the failure of his departure to materialise led the club to put plans for another central defender on hold.

As a result, Real Madrid chose to rely on the defensive options already available rather than add another centre-back. Bastoni, meanwhile, decided to remain with Inter for another season in Italy, despite interest from several other clubs as well as the Spanish side.
