Morocco has been dealt with a massive blow following Rached Fettal’s decision to represent Spain at the international level.

The 20-year-old, who plies his trade for Real Madrid’s youth team (Castilla) has opted to play for the European country, following in the footsteps of Lamine Yamal.

Fettal has been on the radar of both Morocco and Spain, having showcased glimpses of good performances at club level.

Morocco had contacted the fast-rising centre-forward to join the U20 team for the World Cup tournament to be staged in Chile this month. Shockingly, the forward has turned down the opportunity to represent the North African country, as confirmed by head coach of the youth team, Mohamed Ouahbi.

“Rachad is a very talented forward with an excellent scoring instinct. In some matches, he has showcased remarkable qualities, but like any young player, he doesn’t always maintain a consistent level”

“We reached out to him several times to invite him to the national team, but in the end, he chose Spain. That’s his personal decision, and we respect it,” he said.

This come as a huge blow for Morocco, having previously missed out on enterprising Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal to the Spanish national team despite the efforts of the Moroccan federation.

Fettal joined the Spanish giants during the summer transfer window, signing a contract that will keep him at the club until 2028.
