Jose Mourinho has given Aurelien Tchouameni a special responsibility at Real Madrid, appointing the France midfielder as the team’s designated link with referees under new regulations.
The rules restrict discussions with the match official to team captains, prompting Mourinho to establish a specific system for communication during matches. Real Madrid’s first-choice captain is their goalkeeper, who cannot move around the pitch constantly to speak to the referee.
With Federico Valverde unavailable through injury and Vinicius Junior suspended, Mourinho has selected Tchouameni to take on the additional role. Both Valverde and Vinicius Junior are among Real Madrid’s captains.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Tchouameni is now the only player other than the captain who is authorised to approach the referee and speak on behalf of the team while on the pitch.
The regulations leave little room for interpretation. Any other player who approaches the referee to put pressure on them, gesture towards them or protest a decision can receive an immediate yellow card.
Tchouameni’s appointment is based on more than his position in the squad. As a midfielder operating in the centre of the pitch, he is regularly close to challenges and disputed incidents, placing him in a position where communication with the referee may be necessary.
Mourinho is relying on the midfielder’s experience and composure to convey the team’s concerns and requests with a balance of firmness and respect. The role effectively makes Tchouameni the Portuguese manager’s “shadow captain” and his official voice on the field when dealing with match officials.
The fixture information included alongside the report lists AEK Athens in the Champions League on 04 November 2026, followed by Real Madrid against Malaga in La Liga on 07 November 2026, with Racing Santander also listed.
