Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal has responded defiantly to criticism from Real Madrid following his side’s 3-2 victory in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.
Yamal, 17, who is of Moroccan and Equatoguinean descent, was instrumental in the win, registering two assists and playing a pivotal role in Barcelona’s attacking performance.
His remarks came amid Real Madrid’s protests over refereeing decisions, with several of their players vocally challenging the match official during and after the game.
The final, decided by a 116th-minute strike from defender Jules Koundé, saw heated exchanges on the pitch, with Yamal at the centre of much of the post-match debate.
Addressing the tensions in a press conference ahead of Barcelona’s upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final against Inter Milan, Yamal was unapologetic.
“Real Madrid players can’t say anything,” he remarked, reinforcing his position following the heated encounter.
Yamal also addressed claims by some media outlets labelling him “arrogant,” rejecting the notion and instead emphasising his drive and mental strength.
“I don’t have any fear, but I do feel that motivation and get those butterflies in my stomach before a game,” he said.
He continued, “I think that’s a good thing. As for any fear, I left that behind in the park in Mataró a long time ago.”
The teenager, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects, added that he thrives in big-game atmospheres rather than being burdened by them.
“I wouldn’t say I feel any pressure. The atmosphere at the Copa del Rey final, for example, is something to go out and enjoy. I don’t view it as pressure.”
Yamal is expected to play a central role as Barcelona prepare to face Inter in a high-stakes European showdown on Wednesday.
