Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat has faced a major career setback after Real Betis withdrew their plan to sign him permanently from Fenerbahçe, following a serious injury sustained this season.

The Spanish outfit reconsidered activating the purchase clause after Amrabat’s extended absence from the pitch. The move effectively closes the door on a permanent transfer, leaving the midfielder’s future in limbo.

Amrabat had impressed during the early stages of his loan spell in La Liga, quickly adapting to Spanish football and showcasing his qualities in midfield. His performances had prompted Betis to plan for a permanent deal. However, a serious injury sustained during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco disrupted those plans and changed the Andalusian club’s outlook.

The 27-year-old joined Betis on loan last summer to regain form following a period of restructuring at Fenerbahçe, which included major squad changes. He made 11 appearances for Betis this season but failed to register a goal or assist before being sidelined by injury.

With his contract at Fenerbahçe running until 2028, Amrabat is expected to return to the Turkish club at the end of the season. Still, questions remain over his long-term future, as both clubs assess his recovery and potential role moving forward.

This development is a bitter pill for the Moroccan international, who had hoped to cement his place in La Liga, but now faces uncertainty amid injury concerns.
