RC Lens target Senegalese striker Habib Diallo for summer return to Ligue 1

RC Lens are eyeing a potential summer move for Senegalese striker Habib Diallo, who could make a swift return to Ligue 1 just two years after departing for Saudi Arabia.

The 29-year-old forward, currently on loan at Damac FC from Al-Shabab, is reportedly among the key names on Lens’ shortlist as the club prepares for the anticipated exit of forward M’Bala Nzola.

Diallo, who joined Al-Shabab for an estimated €18 million in the summer of 2023, has registered seven goals this season in the Saudi Pro League—numbers that fall short of the prolific form he displayed during his final campaign with Strasbourg, where he netted 20 goals in Ligue 1.

Despite a dip in recent output, Diallo’s reputation in French football remains intact. Over the course of his Ligue 1 career, the Senegal international has accumulated a total of 53 goals in 150 appearances, spanning spells with FC Metz and RC Strasbourg.

His blend of physical presence, experience, and goal-scoring instincts continues to make him an appealing option for clubs seeking proven attacking firepower.

RC Lens, who have built their recent success on a foundation of defensive solidity, are now looking to reinforce their front line with a reliable goal threat. Club officials view Diallo as a player capable of restoring balance to a squad that has struggled at times to convert chances into goals.

His familiarity with the league and ability to link up with midfielders in a high-tempo system make him a strong candidate to fill the striking void expected to be left by Nzola.

The move, however, is not without its complications. Financial considerations are expected to play a critical role in any negotiations. Al-Shabab are likely to demand a significant fee to part ways with the striker they invested heavily in less than a year ago.

Additionally, Diallo’s salary in Saudi Arabia may prove to be a stumbling block, with Ligue 1 clubs generally unable to match the lucrative wages offered in the Gulf.

Nevertheless, Lens remain hopeful that a compromise can be reached, particularly as the player himself is believed to be open to a return to the French top flight.

The opportunity to re-establish himself in European football and compete at a high level could be a motivating factor for Diallo, who has 18 international caps for Senegal and remains in contention for national team selection.

RC Lens are expected to intensify their efforts in the coming weeks as the summer transfer window approaches. With multiple European clubs likely monitoring Diallo’s situation, Lens may need to act quickly to secure his signature.

For now, the club’s interest signals a clear intent to strengthen their offensive options, and Diallo’s potential return would represent both a strategic acquisition and a reunion with a league where he has consistently delivered.
