RB Salzburg’s star forward Karim Konaté is set for a lengthy absence after suffering a serious injury during Tuesday’s 5-0 Champions League defeat to Bayer Leverkusen. The 20-year-old Ivorian international was forced off in the 13th minute, with initial reports suggesting a possible anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture.

Head coach Pepijn Lijnders shared the concerning update during a post-match press conference.

“There is a suspicion of a rupture of the cruciate ligaments, which is very sad. I am really disappointed,” he said, reflecting on the gravity of the injury.

Injury Strikes Without Warning

Konaté went down unchallenged, clutching his knee in visible pain. Medics rushed to attend to the striker, who was eventually substituted and left the pitch in tears.

His replacement, Lucas Gourna-Douath, came on in a game that continued to unravel for Salzburg. “This does not bode well,” Lijnders added, underscoring the severity of the situation.

Further Tests to Confirm Diagnosis

Salzburg has confirmed that the young striker will undergo additional tests to determine the full extent of the injury.

The scans, set to take place on Wednesday, will reveal whether Konaté’s season is indeed over.

If the initial fears are confirmed, it would be a significant setback for both the player and his club.

A Key Absence for Salzburg

Konaté’s potential long-term absence would leave Salzburg with a considerable void in their attack.

The Ivorian forward had a stellar campaign last season, finishing as the Austrian Bundesliga’s top scorer and establishing himself as one of the team’s most influential players.

His contributions were seen as vital to Salzburg’s hopes in both domestic and European competitions this year.

A Tough Blow for Konaté

For Konaté, the timing of this injury is particularly unfortunate. The former ASEC Mimosas player had only recently returned to top form following a previous injury layoff.

This latest setback will require patience and resilience as he faces another challenging road to recovery.

Salzburg’s European ambitions and domestic campaigns now face uncertainty without their talismanic striker, while Konaté’s personal journey back to fitness will undoubtedly be one of determination and resolve.

Further updates from the Austrian club are awaited as they assess the full impact of the injury.
