RB Leipzig name 26-man squad for South Africa tour against Mamelodi Sundowns

RB Leipzig have confirmed their travelling squad for a post-season tour of South Africa, where they will face newly crowned African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in a friendly.

Sundowns secured their second CAF Champions League title on Sunday night after defeating AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate in the two-legged final.

The South African club’s squad will be affected by international commitments before the meeting with Leipzig. Several Sundowns players are expected to join the Bafana Bafana camp as preparations begin for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving the club’s remaining senior players to prepare for one more match of the season.

Leipzig, who finished third in the Bundesliga this season, will travel with a squad listed by the club as containing 26 players. The group includes 16 first-team players and 10 academy players.

The German club also confirmed that, like their opponents, they will be without several important players because of international duty. Six of Leipzig’s key players have received World Cup call-ups, including Yan Diomande, regarded by the club as arguably their best player. The forward will represent the Ivory Coast.

RB Leipzig said on their official website: “RB Leipzig set off on their post-season tour on Monday afternoon, with the Red Bulls in the country until 30th May. A total of 16 first-team players and 10 academy players are making the trip.”

The friendly will give Mamelodi Sundowns the opportunity to mark their continental success against opposition from one of Europe’s leading domestic leagues. Leipzig’s visit also provides a final competitive-style test for the players who remain available before the international period begins.

The fixture comes after Sundowns completed a successful CAF Champions League campaign by overcoming Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat in the final. Their 2-1 aggregate victory secured the club’s second title in the competition and crowned them African champions.

With players from both teams set to report for national-team duty, the match is expected to feature a mixture of established first-team names and younger players. Leipzig’s travelling group includes a sizeable academy contingent, while Sundowns will assess which members of their championship-winning squad remain available after the Bafana Bafana call-ups.
