Rayan’s late header rescues Brazil in 1-1 draw with Australia

Brazil’s rebuilding project under Carlo Ancelotti remains unresolved after a stoppage-time header from Bournemouth forward Rayan secured a 1-1 draw against Australia in their first match since the 2026 World Cup.

The Selecao were second best for long periods in Australia, struggling to sustain pressure in attack while repeatedly allowing the hosts opportunities to exploit gaps in their defensive shape.

Australia were rewarded for their more organised display when Nestory Irankunda opened the scoring with an outstanding free-kick. Brazil avoided a damaging defeat only when Rayan rose to meet a corner and headed in with virtually the final action of the match.

The visitors appeared to have taken the lead during the first half after Estevao finished following a combination with Endrick. However, the goal was disallowed by VAR because Bruno Guimaraes had committed a foul earlier in the move.

Brazil had more possession after the break but remained short of clear chances. Raphinha and Estevao offered their most promising moments, although neither could find a way through a disciplined Australia defence.

Ancelotti responded by sending on Samuel Lino, Pedro and Rayan as he attempted to add greater threat to the attack. Australia eventually took the lead through Irankunda, whose free-kick gave the home side a deserved advantage.

Brazil increased the pressure after falling behind, with Australia retreating to defend their lead. The sustained pressure finally told in the closing seconds, when Rayan met the corner and directed his header into the net.

The result prevented Brazil from starting the post-World Cup period with a defeat, but their performance will do little to ease concerns over the direction of Ancelotti’s team.

Only four players who started Brazil’s World Cup defeat by Norway were named in the line-up for this match. The side nevertheless contained considerable experience, including Marquinhos, Bruno Guimaraes, Vinicius Junior and Raphinha.

Ancelotti will have several areas to address before Brazil’s next fixture. Their defending lacked consistency, while the attacking players were unable to provide the individual quality and sustained threat expected from them.

Vinicius Junior had limited influence on the match, while Endrick was withdrawn in the second half after failing to make a significant impact. Raphinha produced some of Brazil’s brighter moments, but the visitors could not maintain enough attacking pressure to control the game.

The draw adds to the scrutiny surrounding Ancelotti’s efforts to establish a settled identity for Brazil. His task is made more demanding by the expectations placed on one of international football’s most successful teams.

Brazil will have another chance to measure their progress when they face Australia again on Tuesday. They will then continue their schedule with a match against India.
