Rayan Kolli left out as Vladimir Petkovic names Algeria squad, father sends subtle message

Vladimir Petkovic has named his 29-man Algeria squad for June’s friendlies against Rwanda and Sweden, with in-form striker Rayan Kolli among the notable omissions.

The Queens Park Rangers forward has impressed in the English Championship this season, making 22 appearances and contributing five goals and three assists.

Despite his steady rise and his continued commitment to Algeria at youth level, the 20-year-old was overlooked in favour of more established names such as Amine Gouiri, Baghdad Bounedjah, and Amin Chiakha.

Kolli, who holds both Algerian and British nationality, has already represented the North African nation at under-20 level.

His blend of mobility, technical quality, and work ethic has made him a player to watch across the Channel.

But while his form has drawn praise, it wasn’t enough to earn a spot in Petkovic’s latest selection.

The exclusion prompted a subtle response from Kolli’s camp.

His father, Lakhdar Kolli, posted a message on social media that appeared to convey both understanding and quiet frustration.

“Petkovic certainly has his own plans, and we respect that. As for Rayan, he’s still young and still has time to decide on his international future. And we will respect his choice,” he wrote.

While carefully worded, the statement hints at the possibility that Kolli’s future with Algeria is no longer a certainty.

The striker has previously turned down advances from England’s Football Association, opting to commit to Algeria instead.

However, the latest snub may reopen the door for a change of heart.

Kolli’s absence comes at a time when many fans and pundits have been calling for the national team to incorporate younger talents ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

But Petkovic, who took over the reins earlier this year, has thus far stuck to a more conservative approach, placing trust in seasoned regulars and familiar names.

The omission of other promising talents, such as Adil Boulbina, further underscores the coach’s reluctance to experiment, even in friendly fixtures.

While his decisions are rooted in a longer-term strategy, they may be costly if emerging stars begin to look elsewhere.

For now, Rayan Kolli remains patient—but the message from his camp is clear: time is on his side, but loyalty should not be taken for granted.
