Manchester City assistant manager Pep Lijnders has hailed Rayan Cherki’s impact in Saturday’s FA Cup quarterfinal against Liverpool, but cautioned that the France international remains a developing talent.

Cherki, who joined City from Lyon during the summer, dazzled with his vision and technical skill, helping drive a dominant performance at the Etihad Stadium.

Despite the display, Lijnders stressed that City’s coaching staff continue to guide the 20-year-old’s growth, particularly in exploiting spaces and timing his runs to maximize threat.

“The only thing we are working on with him is always receiving the ball to hurt the opposition,” he said. He highlighted Cherki’s assist to Antoine Semenyo as an example of the midfielder’s intelligence and timing in attack.

“When he faces the goal, he becomes so, so dangerous,” Lijnders added, noting the interplay between Cherki and his teammates is key to unlocking opposition defenses.

Beyond his technical ability, Lijnders emphasized Cherki’s commitment off the ball. The young midfielder’s defensive work rate and determination to improve, he said, are central to his development.

“If you saw today the work ethic without the ball, that defines with Cherki how he is growing. He wants to improve as well,” Lijnders noted, suggesting the player’s mentality is just as important as his natural flair.

Cherki’s performance has sparked optimism among City supporters, who hope the French international can become a consistent creative force in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

The assistant manager indicated that the coaching team is actively nurturing Cherki’s instincts, ensuring he becomes more effective in attacking pockets and linking with teammates.

With the remainder of the season promising further opportunities, Lijnders believes Cherki is on a clear trajectory to reach his potential, though patience will be required.
