Raphinha the lone veteran as Flick’s young Barcelona side rewrites Camp Nou history

Hansi Flick has broken Pep Guardiola’s long-standing Barcelona record by naming the youngest starting line-up in the club’s history at Spotify Camp Nou, with an average age of just 23.18 years.

The German coach achieved the milestone during a historic victory for Barcelona, surpassing the previous record set by Guardiola 14 years ago. According to journalist Oriol Jove, Flick’s starting XI was younger than the team Guardiola selected against BATE Borisov in the Champions League in December 2011.

The line-up underlined Barcelona’s growing reliance on youth. Seven of the starters had progressed through the club’s La Masia academy, while the side also included Spain internationals Pedri and Joan Garcia. Only two of the 11 players, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon, were born outside Spain.

Raphinha, born in 1996, was the only starter born in the 20th century. Joan Garcia, Eric Garcia and Anthony Gordon were all born in 2001, while Gerard Martin and Pedri were born in 2002. Fermin Lopez was born in 2003.

The most striking feature of the selection was the inclusion of four players born in 2007: Pau Cubarsi, Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Lamine Yamal.

Barcelona’s youthful direction extends beyond a single match and forms part of a wider squad-building project led by sporting director Deco. The club currently has the joint-youngest squad in La Liga, with an average age of 24.2, level with Levante.

Across Europe’s five major leagues, Barcelona’s squad is the fifth youngest. Only Auxerre, with an average age of 23.6, Parma at 23.4, Toulouse at 22.5 and Strasbourg at 22 are younger.

The current Barcelona squad contains 11 players under the age of 20. Three of them Yamal, Cubarsi and Bernal already have considerable experience at the highest level despite not yet reaching their 19th birthdays.

At the other end of the age scale, Barcelona have only five players aged over 30: Wojciech Szczesny, who is 36, Joao Cancelo, 32, Dominik Livakovic, 31, and Andreas Christensen and Rodri, both 30.

Three of those five older players are new signings. Gordon, aged 25, and Karim Adeyemi, 24, provide what Deco describes as the squad’s “middle layer”, offering greater balance between the teenage prospects and the senior members of the team.

Flick’s record-breaking selection surpassed Guardiola’s previous mark from December 2011. Guardiola’s Barcelona team beat BATE Borisov 4-0 in that Champions League match after beginning with five players from the reserve side: Marc Bartra, Raphinha, Isaac Cuenca, Martin Montoya and Sergi Roberto.

The latest line-up therefore gives Flick an official place in Barcelona history, while also highlighting the scale of the club’s current commitment to developing and promoting young talent.
