Rangers sign South Africa defender Olwethu Makhanya on long-term deal

Rangers have completed the signing of Bafana Bafana defender Olwethu Makhanya from Philadelphia Union on a four-year contract, with an option for a further year, subject to international clearance.

The 22-year-old becomes the Scottish Premiership side’s eighth arrival of the summer as they continue rebuilding their squad before the new league campaign.

Makhanya, who has been capped by South Africa, moves to Ibrox from Major League Soccer and will link up with his new team-mates ahead of the start of the 2026-27 season.

The Glasgow club confirmed the deal in a statement, saying the agreement is an “initial four-year deal, with the option of an additional year”, pending the completion of the relevant paperwork.

‘A dream come true’

Speaking to the club’s official website after the move was announced, Makhanya said the chance to join Rangers fulfilled a long-held ambition to play in Europe.

“I can’t even explain how I am feeling right now, it is honestly a big honour and a huge blessing for me to joins such a big club with so much history. I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

“For me, it has always been a dream to play football in Europe, ever since I was a kid, so to be here is a dream come true.”

Rangers have not disclosed the transfer fee involved in the deal.

Squad building continues at Ibrox

Makhanya’s arrival further strengthens Rangers’ defensive options as they look to challenge domestically in the Scottish Premiership and in European competition this season.

The South African joins a list of summer recruits brought in to freshen the squad, with the club active across multiple positions during the current transfer window.

Rangers will begin their Scottish Premiership campaign in the coming weeks, with Makhanya expected to compete for a place in the first team once his international clearance is confirmed.
