Rangers Manager Barry Ferguson defends Cyriel Dessers amid fan criticism

Rangers Manager Barry Ferguson defends Cyriel Dessers amid fan criticism

Newly appointed Rangers manager Barry Ferguson has expressed his support for Cyriel Dessers, despite ongoing criticism from sections of the club’s fanbase.

The Nigerian striker has been under scrutiny for inconsistent performances, but his contributions on the pitch tell a different story.

With 18 goals and six assists in 40 appearances this season, Dessers has remained a key figure for the Scottish side.

Backing from the new boss

Speaking to Rangers Review, Ferguson highlighted Dessers’ recent form and dismissed suggestions that the striker should leave the club.

Look, he’s scored two goals in two games, 22 goals last year, and I don’t think you can get rid of him, Ferguson stated.

The 30-year-old forward was previously linked with a move away from Ibrox after losing his starting spot to Hamza Igamane.

However, following discussions with former manager Philippe Clement, Dessers decided to stay and fight for his place.

Room for improvement, but valuable contribution

While Ferguson acknowledged that Dessers has areas to improve, he emphasized the striker’s positive attributes, particularly his work rate and determination.

“He lacks a bit of quality at times, but if he had that quality, he would probably be playing in a different league,” Ferguson added.

The manager also noted that while Rangers may need additional competition in the striker role, Dessers’ experience and goal-scoring ability make him an important asset to the squad.

Focus on the season ahead

With Ferguson now at the helm, Dessers will be eager to prove his worth and cement his place in the starting lineup.

Despite facing criticism, his goal tally remains one of the highest in the squad, and with the backing of his new manager, he has the opportunity to silence his doubters.

As Rangers push forward in their domestic and European campaigns, Dessers’ contributions could prove vital.

Ferguson’s faith in him suggests that, despite fan skepticism, the Nigerian forward still has an important role to play at Ibrox.
