Rangers boss Derek McInnes hails ‘strong, confident’ Olwethu Makhanya after defender seals Ibrox move

Rangers head coach Derek McInnes says Olwethu Makhanya has “all the attributes to make a real impact” after the South African defender completed his move to the Ibrox club from Philadelphia Union.

The 22-year-old was unveiled on Thursday, joining the Scottish Premiership side from the Major League Soccer team as part of a long-term plan to bolster Rangers’ defensive options.

Makhanya has signed a four-year contract, with Rangers holding an option to extend the deal by a further year should certain conditions be met.

McInnes, speaking to the club’s in-house media, outlined why the Ibrox hierarchy moved to secure the Bafana Bafana centre-back.

“We’re really pleased to bring Olwethu to the club,” said the Rangers manager. “He’s a player we have watched closely, and we feel he has all the attributes to make a real impact here, while also continuing to develop his game.

“For someone so young, he’s already gained experience in different environments.

“He is a strong, physical and confident defender, and I look forward to seeing him settle into the squad and show what he is capable of as a Rangers player.”

From Stellenbosch to MLS and on to Ibrox

Makhanya arrives in Glasgow after a spell in the United States with Philadelphia Union, where he continued his progression following his move from South African club Stellenbosch FC.

His switch to Rangers represents the latest step in a developing career that has already taken him from the South African domestic game to MLS and now to one of Scotland’s most prominent clubs.

The Bafana Bafana defender becomes one of the newest players from Mzansi to secure an opportunity at such a high-profile European side, adding to the growing list of South Africans making the move to major leagues abroad.
