Raja Casablanca earned their first point in the CAF Champions League group stage on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Maniema Union. The Moroccans had hoped to bounce back from their earlier defeat to rivals AS FAR Rabat but faced unexpected resistance from the Congolese side in an engaging encounter.
Younes Najjari gave Raja an early lead in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a well-crafted attack to put the visitors ahead.
Despite their dominance in the first half, Raja struggled to extend their advantage, leaving them vulnerable. Maniema Union capitalized on a late defensive lapse, with Joseph Bakasu Banka equalizing just six minutes before full time.
The result leaves Raja Casablanca at the bottom of Group B with one point from two matches. They trail Maniema Union, who now have two points, while AS FAR Rabat sits at the top with three points and a game in hand. Mamelodi Sundowns, who are yet to play their second match, remain just ahead of Raja on goal difference.
Raja’s coach, who had hoped for a stronger showing following their derby loss to AS FAR, will now turn his attention to their next match against South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday, December 15.
The away fixture presents a tough challenge as Raja seeks to reignite their campaign and keep their hopes of advancing to the knockout stages alive.
The draw, while disappointing for Raja, offered a glimpse of Maniema Union’s resilience and determination. For both teams, the group stage remains wide open, with each result now crucial in the race for qualification.
