Rafik Messali signals desire for Algeria call-up as Vladimir Petkovic finalises AFCON plans
Algeria manager Vladimir Petković has received clear interest from Toulouse’s Rafik Messali, who has expressed his readiness to compete for a place in the national team less than a month before the Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.
The Ligue 1 winger, restored to form following meniscus and ankle setbacks, affirmed that his ambition to represent Algeria at senior level remains intact.
Messali, previously pre-selected for the country’s U20 side without making the final squad, admitted that although the timing may be tight, his ambition remains intact.
“You have to tell yourself that anything is possible at any time. Of course, it’s in the back of my mind, but right now, I’m more focused on my playing time at my club. The selection process will come gradually; it always comes at the right time,” he said, noting that consolidating his position at Toulouse remains his immediate priority.
Born in Toulouse to Algerian parents, Messali has long been viewed as a potential option for the national setup, with his versatility across the right flank — from full-back to winger — seen as a valuable asset.

His recent performances have revived discussions around the 24-year-old’s international future, particularly as Algeria prepares to finalise its AFCON squad.
Despite acknowledging that his inclusion would be a surprise, Messali said he fully believes in the team’s prospects at the tournament, regardless of whether he is selected.
“I think we have a good squad. I believe in them for the AFCON. Well, for them, if I’m there, great, if I’m not, it’s not a big deal. But I think we have a good squad and they can go far in the AFCON. There are a lot of good players, new players, most of them play in Europe and it’s beautiful to watch, in any case.”
Algeria’s last continental triumph came in 2019, but the national team has struggled since, exiting in the group stage of the past two editions.
Petković, appointed earlier this year, is tasked with restoring confidence and guiding the Fennecs back to the level expected by supporters.
With preparations entering their final phase, Messali’s comments add another layer to the selection debate as the coaching staff weigh up form, fitness, and squad balance.
While his chances remain uncertain, the Toulouse player has made his intentions unmistakably clear.
