Rafik Messali is beginning to establish himself as a potential solution on the right flank for Algeria after making his second start in the French Ligue 1 last weekend.
The 21-year-old, who has previously represented Algeria at U20 level, is making strides with Toulouse in the right wing-back position – an area where the national team faces limited future options.
Messali started the season with Toulouse’s reserve team in National 2 but has been a regular presence in the senior squad since late October. His playing time has steadily increased since the start of 2025.
The Algerian has made three starts in the Coupe de France and made his Ligue 1 debut as a right midfielder against Auxerre.
He followed that with a brief appearance against PSG before starting in the 4-0 win over Angers.
Messali’s style of play has drawn comparisons to Rayan Aït-Nouri, though he is considered less technically refined.
He has demonstrated defensive discipline and provided attacking support, despite showing occasional signs of inexperience.
With Mohamed Farsi returning to action in MLS and Youcef Atal often sidelined by injuries, Messali could emerge as a viable option for Algeria ahead of the next AFCON tournament if his development in Ligue 1 continues.
