Former Espérance de Tunis goalkeeper Radhi Jaïdi shared his thoughts on the ceremony’s organization, the role of Morocco in elevating African football, and the crowning of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman as the continent’s best player.
Speaking to Foot Africa journalist Abdelouarit Ibaalal, Jaïdi expressed his admiration for Morocco’s hospitality and the significance of the event.
“Frankly, I am dazzled by the hospitality of Morocco, of Moroccans. We are proud to attend this event.
With the African legends, we had a great time, we celebrated the efforts of African players and athletes,” Jaïdi said.
He went on to highlight Morocco’s increasing importance in African football, referencing the country’s role in hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the continent’s upcoming bid for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
“We will see Morocco progress, be a showcase for Africa,” he added. “It is the pride of being African.”
Jaïdi, a proud Tunisian, also acknowledged Morocco’s achievements in football.
“As a Tunisian and Maghrebi, I congratulate all Moroccans for this progress,” he said, emphasizing the growing recognition of Africa as a global football hub.
The conversation then shifted to the announcement of Lookman Ademola as the 2024 African Player of the Year.
Jaïdi expressed his surprise but acknowledged the Nigerian forward’s standout season.
“I said from the beginning that it is a tough competition between all the candidates.
But I am still a little bit surprised because, in my opinion, I thought Hakimi had a lead with what he has done, not only this year but the last 5 years,” Jaïdi remarked, referencing Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi, a contender for the award.
However, Jaïdi ultimately praised Lookman for his impressive performances over the past year. “But Lookman deserves it. He had a very good year, he won trophies with Atalanta.
He broke a record by scoring three goals in the Europa League final with Atalanta, he scored a lot of goals with his club. He deserved it,” Jaïdi concluded, offering his congratulations to the winner and all nominees.
The 2024 CAF Awards in Marrakech showcased not only individual achievements but also underscored the growing influence of Moroccan football on the continental and global stage.
With Lookman’s victory, the night also reflected the high level of competition among Africa’s finest football talents.
