Quwan Plaatjies makes PSL history as first player to score hat-trick on debut

Stellenbosch FC forward Quwan Plaatjies has etched his name into the Premier Soccer League record books after becoming the first player to score a hat-trick on his PSL debut.

The 20-year-old marked his first appearance in South Africa’s top flight in spectacular fashion, scoring all three goals in Stellenbosch’s 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants on Friday night.

Plaatjies was handed a surprise starting role by coach Gavin Hunt, with experienced forwards Bradley Grobler and Ashley du Preez beginning the match on the bench. The youngster repaid Hunt’s faith with a composed display that culminated in a piece of history.

His opening goal came after a well-timed run and a calm finish from the edge of the penalty area. He then completed his treble with two almost identical headers, both supplied by fellow Stellenbosch academy graduate Raoul Daniels.

Daniels, only 19, was making just his third professional appearance, making the achievement an even stronger reflection of Stellenbosch’s commitment to developing young talent.

A record-breaking night for Stellies youngster

Plaatjies’ three-goal haul also placed him among a select group of Stellenbosch players to have scored a hat-trick for the club.

He is only the third player in the club’s history to achieve the feat, following Stanley Muishond and Iqraam Rayners.

Muishond scored three times against Mthatha Bucks in the Motsepe Foundation Championship, while Rayners produced an extraordinary five-goal performance against Polokwane City in the Betway Premiership in 2024.

But Plaatjies’ achievement stands apart because his treble came on his very first PSL appearance, immediately giving him a place in the competition’s history.

From academy success to senior stardom

The performance was not entirely unexpected for those who have followed Plaatjies’ development at Stellenbosch.

The forward was part of the club’s successful 2023/24 DStv Diski Challenge-winning team before travelling to England for the 2024 Premier League Next Generation Cup.

He played a key role in Stellenbosch’s triumph in the tournament, scoring a memorable winner against Aston Villa before his side defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in the final.

His journey to the senior team has therefore been built through a pathway that has already produced opportunities against some of England’s biggest clubs.

Plaatjies dedicates record to late mother

Beyond the significance of the record, the night carried deep personal meaning for Plaatjies.

The young forward lost his mother at an early age and dedicated his remarkable three-goal performance against Gallants to her.

His treble also placed him among the 134 players who have scored at least three goals in a single PSL match. Since the beginning of the 1996/97 season, 191 hat-tricks have been recorded, with every campaign producing at least one except the 2017/18 season.

The record for the most hat-tricks in a single PSL campaign belongs to the 1998/99 season, when 15 trebles were scored.

Ndlanya still leads hat-trick chart

Pollen Ndlanya remains the PSL’s leading individual hat-trick scorer, having registered six trebles during his career.

Four came during his time with Kaizer Chiefs, while he also scored one each for AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates.

The fastest PSL hat-trick, meanwhile, remains James Chamanga’s remarkable five-minute blitz for Swallows against Platinum Stars in December 2007. Chamanga scored his three goals between the 20th and 25th minutes and later added two more to finish the match with five.

For Plaatjies, however, the significance of his achievement lies in a record that now belongs solely to him: no player before him had ever marked a PSL debut with three goals.
