Qatari outfit Al Ahli SC have announced the successful acquisition of former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong in the ongoing winter transfer window, marking a major boost to their defensive lineup.
The 32-year-old centre-back joins Al Ahli on a permanent deal after ending his spell with Saudi Pro League outfit Al Kholood. With his wealth of experience, he is expected to contribute significant towards the growth and achievement of the club.
“He’s here, he’s ready. Welcome to the club, William. Let’s make history together.” Wrote the club on Instagram while announcing the signing of the Nigeria star.
Troost-Ekong, known for his leadership, physical presence, and vast international experience, has been handed his preferred number five jersey.
The Nigeria international has had spells with several clubs in Europe including Fulham, Tottenham, Udinese, Watford, PAOK, Salernitana, and others.
He left Europe in 2024 and has since played for Al Kholood and Al Ahli in recent move.
Before departing Al Kholood made 16 appearances across competition for the Saudi Arabia outfit.
At the international level, the 32-year-old centre-back made 83 appearances in his ten-year run with the Super Eagles, racking up eight goals across the period. He secured three medals and also featured at five major tournament for the national team.
Prior to the AFCON 2025 tournament, Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from the national team, coming as a surprise to many.
He was a consistent pillar for Nigeria. He won AFCON bronze in 2019, made the Best XI in 2021, and captained the team to the 2023 AFCON final, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
