Egyptian international Hamdi Fathi triggered a crisis during his team Al-Wakrah’s match against Al-Sadd in the Qatari League at the Al-Janoub Stadium, part of the Qatar Stars League’s thirteenth round of fixtures.
Chaos ensued when the match was halted in the 63rd minute as Al-Wakrah demanded a penalty kick after a challenge from Al-Sadd’s Paulo Otávio on Omar Salah, Al-Wakrah’s winger, inside the penalty area in the 61st minute.
There was a handball by Hamdi Fathi inside his team’s penalty area following a shot from the Brazilian Guilherme Torres.
The referee initially refused to award it but then, in the 63rd minute, reviewed the handball incident involving Hamdi Fathi inside Al-Wakrah’s penalty area and awarded a penalty kick in favor of Al-Sadd.
Despite the two-minute crisis that ensued, Akram Afif missed the penalty.
Al-Sadd subsequently took the lead with 32 points, while Al-Wakrah occupied second place with 28 points.
Sheikh Khalifa bin Hassan Al Thani, the president of Al-Wakrah Club, demanded that his team’s players withdraw following the awarding of a penalty kick to Al-Sadd and protested the non-award of a penalty kick to his team in the preceding game.
