Despite facing criticism and controversy, Qatar has commenced construction on the first stadium for the 2022 World Cup. Located in Al-Wakrah, 15 km from Doha, the stadium will accommodate 40,000 fans and is slated for completion in 2018.
The construction is being overseen by the local company HBK, which has committed to adhering to Qatar’s labor laws and international best practices to ensure worker safety.
Critics, including FIFA President Sepp Blatter and former footballer Eric Cantona, have voiced concerns about Qatar’s suitability as a host nation due to its lack of a sports culture and alleged human rights issues.
