Michel Platini, the UEFA President, has expressed concerns about the working conditions of certain laborers on the construction sites for the future World Cup installations in Qatar. He emphasized that addressing the issues faced by workers should be a priority.
Platini stated, “There are problems in Qatar, and the Emirate must absolutely resolve them. I think we gave a magnificent gift to the Qataris.” He made these comments during an interview on Canal Plus.
In addition to addressing workers’ conditions, Platini also shared his perspective on the timing of the competition. “Now they have to adapt a little bit. It’s much more important than knowing if in nine years we will play in the summer or in winter,” he added.
This discussion comes in the wake of an investigation by The Guardian, which accused Qatar of subjecting workers to conditions resembling slavery on the stadium construction sites for the 2022 World Cup.
