Pyramids sign Egypt defender Eyad El Askalani from Rostov in permanent deal

Pyramids have completed the signing of Egyptian defender Eyad El Askalani from Russian side Rostov as they move to reinforce their back line for the new season.

The Cairo club confirmed on Tuesday that El Askalani has joined on a permanent basis, finalising a move that had been in motion since the player underwent a medical earlier this month.

FilGoal.com had previously reported that the 21-year-old had successfully passed his medical tests ahead of sealing the transfer, paving the way for Pyramids to announce the deal officially.

The Egypt youth international arrives to bolster a central defensive unit that already includes Mahmoud Marei, Ahmed Sami and Osama Galal, with the club reshaping its options following the expiry of Ali Gabr’s contract.

Young Egypt international returns from Russia

El Askalani moves to Pyramids after a spell with Rostov, who he joined in 2024 from Ismaily.

During his time in Russia, the centre-back made 10 first-team appearances for Rostov. His game time there came despite a significant injury setback, as he has only recently returned to action after suffering a torn cruciate ligament.

El Askalani has been regarded as one of the more promising defenders of his age group in Egypt, having been part of the country’s youth set-up as well as the Olympic team. His involvement with Egypt’s youth national teams and the Olympic side underlines his standing as a player with potential for future senior international recognition.

Pyramids reshape defensive options

Pyramids’ move for El Askalani comes as the club seek to maintain depth and competition in central defence after the departure of experienced defender Ali Gabr at the end of his contract.

With Gabr no longer on their books, Pyramids now have multiple centre-back options in El Askalani, Mahmoud Marei, Ahmed Sami and Osama Galal as they look to stay competitive domestically and in continental competitions.

The club did not disclose the length of El Askalani’s contract or any financial details of the transfer in Tuesday’s announcement.
