Pyramids FC entered their league encounter with Al Ahly carrying more than just competitive tension.
The Cairo side voiced disapproval of referee Javier Rojas, whose actions before kickoff left club officials unsettled.
Rojas, the Spanish official assigned to the fifth-round Egyptian Premier League fixture at Al Salam Stadium, was seen in conversation with members of Al Ahly’s coaching staff, including their compatriot Jose Ribeiro. This scene did not sit well with the Pyramids camp.
Ahmed Zaher, administrative director of Pyramids FC, formally recorded his objection with the match observer, noting that such conduct could be misinterpreted on a stage where fairness is critical.
The appointment of Rojas was already a talking point. Back in July 2024, he had awarded a penalty to Al Ahly in a league game against Pyramids, a decision still fresh in memory. Al Ahly had even requested foreign referees for their meetings this season, adding further weight to the atmosphere.
Supporters filled Al Salam Stadium with color and noise, determined to rally their players before the high-stakes contest began.
