Pyramids FC has backed off its earlier plea to use foreign referees for its upcoming Egyptian League showdown with Al Ahly on April 12, the Egyptian Football Association revealed Monday.
The club emailed the association to withdraw its March 28 request, signaling a shift as tensions swirl in the title race. Pyramids had blasted the association’s recent move to scrap a three-point deduction from Al Ahly, a penalty tied to a chaotic summit match against Zamalek.
Now, Pyramids and Zamalek are threatening legal action through the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, decrying the softened sanctions on Al Ahly.
Pyramids vowed to fight for its “legitimate rights” legally, while Zamalek doubled down, insisting on strict enforcement of league rules.
An Al Ahly insider fired back, accusing both rivals of stirring trouble.
“The Football Association voluntarily waived FIFA’s conditions and granted Pyramids a professional club license,” the insider told Kooora, slamming Pyramids’ unchecked spending. “Successive Football Association boards treated Zamalek differently,” the insider added fueling cries of unfairness as the season heats up.
