Pyramids FC have qualified for the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League for the first time in the club’s history, progressing on aggregate despite a 2-0 defeat to Morocco’s AS FAR in the quarter-final second leg on Tuesday evening.

The Egyptian side travelled to the Stade d’Honneur in Meknes with a commanding 4-1 advantage from the first leg, and although the Moroccans delivered a spirited response in front of their home crowd, it was not enough to overturn the deficit.

AS FAR signalled their intent early, with Youssef El Fahli opening the scoring in the 8th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for a dramatic comeback.

Pyramids struggled to settle into the game and were put under sustained pressure throughout the opening half, but managed to reach the interval without conceding further.

The Moroccan side continued to push in the second period, and their efforts were rewarded when second-half substitute Joel Beya added a second goal in the 68th minute, just 11 minutes after coming on.

The home fans rallied behind their team, but despite the mounting tension and a spirited final push, AS FAR were unable to find the crucial third goal to level the aggregate score.

Pyramids had a chance to all but end the tie through Congolese striker Fiston Mayele, who found the net once again after scoring twice in the first leg.

However, his effort was ruled out, keeping the hosts’ hopes alive until the final whistle.

Despite the setback on the night, the Egyptian side’s dominant display in the first leg proved decisive, sending them through to the last four of Africa’s premier club competition.

Looking ahead, Pyramids FC will meet the winners of the tie between South Africa’s Orlando Pirates and Algerian champions MC Alger.

The Pirates hold a narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg, with the return fixture set to determine Pyramids’ next opponent.

The semi-final first leg is scheduled to be played away on April 18, with the return match in Egypt on April 25, where Pyramids will have the opportunity to fight for a spot in the CAF Champions League final.
