Following the triumph of the 9th Francophonie Games in Kinshasa, President H.E Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi expressed his aspiration to host another major sporting event in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In a special briefing on Thursday, February 22, 2024, the President declared his desire to promote the DRC’s candidacy for the 2029 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in football.

“I aim to promote the DRC’s candidacy for AFCON 2029 in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” He announced.

Undoubtedly, a formidable challenge, hosting the AFCON, involves overcoming numerous internal hurdles within the next five years.

Tshisekedi acknowledged the magnitude of the task, emphasizing the need to initiate groundwork promptly.

The President’s vision extends beyond the realm of sports, representing a broader ambition for the nation once led by Patrice Emery Lumumba.

As the DRC confronts multifaceted challenges in various aspects of life, the President underscores the urgency of laying the foundations for the continental competition.

With 2029 looming closer, strategic planning and concerted efforts are imperative to ensure the successful realization of this ambitious goal on Congolese soil.

Tshisekedi’s proclamation aligns with a commitment to proactive, well-coordinated preparations, steering away from last-minute endeavours that could jeopardize the monumental undertaking.
