The Cadet Squirrels of Benin made history by clinching the top spot on the President Cup list. This under-17 football tournament, held in Lomé (Togo) since April 19, culminated in an electrifying final on Sunday, with Benin securing a 2-1 victory over Mali.
In a thrilling showdown at Lomé’s municipal stadium on Togo’s Independence Day, the tournament’s two standout teams, Benin and Mali, showcased their skills. The momentum swung early on, with Mali’s impressive victory over Togo (4-0) in the semi-final setting the stage. However, Moussa Diakité’s missed penalty in the 15th minute shifted the dynamics, reigniting Benin’s spirit. Despite intense play, the first half concluded without any goals.
After the break, Benin seized control, earning a penalty of their own. Gaston Houngbedji broke the deadlock, putting Benin in the lead. Despite Mali’s efforts to equalize, neither Aly Malie nor the brilliant Mohamed Haidara could find the net. However, seven minutes from full time, Mahamadou Dianka leveled the score. The match headed into extra time.
In a thrilling climax, Benin proved their mettle, with Aaron Ibilola scoring in the 115th minute, securing victory for his team. With three goals to his name, Ibilola emerged as the tournament’s top scorer. The final score stood at 2-1, sparking jubilation among the Squirrels and their supporters. This victory marked Benin’s first trophy since independence, according to certain officials.
In the third-place match, Nigeria defeated Togo 3-0, courtesy of goals from Kehinde Ayinde, Orji Okonkwo, and Jack Ipalibo.
