Nigeria Assert Dominance Over Mali in President Cup Opener
Tournament favourites Nigeria lived up to expectations as they began their 2014 President Cup campaign with a commanding 2-0 victory over Mali in the opening Group B clash. The win places the Flying Eagles in a strong position as they aim to secure top spot ahead of the semi-finals.
Group B was reduced to just two teams following a late withdrawal, meaning both Nigeria and Mali are already assured of a place in the knockout stages. However, the two sides will face each other twice in a home-and-away format to determine group rankings.
In Monday’s encounter, Nigeria showed why they are widely tipped to go all the way. The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Hamza Najeeb coolly slotted home a penalty, giving Emmanuel Amuneke’s side a deserved lead. The Flying Eagles continued to control proceedings, despite Mali’s efforts to respond with attacking intent.
The result was sealed late in the match when Dauda Abdulganiyu netted in the 83rd minute, capping off a dominant performance by the Nigerians.
With both teams now preparing for their second and final group fixture, scheduled for next Wednesday, Nigeria will look to maintain their momentum, while Mali will seek a response in hopes of claiming top spot in the group.
