Nigeria, the clear favorite in the 2014 President Cup, made a strong start to the tournament by defeating Mali in the opening match of Group B. With only two teams remaining in the group due to a withdrawal, both countries are automatically qualified for the semi-finals but will compete in home and away matches to determine their final positions.
In an exciting encounter, Nigeria asserted their dominance, breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute through a penalty converted by Hamza Najeeb. This early goal solidified the control of Emmanuel Amuneke’s team. Despite Mali’s efforts, Nigeria remained in control and sealed the victory with a second goal in the 83rd minute, courtesy of Dauda Abdulganiyu.
The two teams are set to face each other again next Wednesday in what promises to be another compelling match.
