Benin Edge Ivory Coast in Thrilling President Cup Clash
Benin’s Cadet Squirrels delivered a spirited performance on Monday, securing a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the second round of the group stage at the 2014 President Cup. The win marked a strong comeback for Emile Enassoum’s side, who had impressed in their opening fixture against Togo but failed to convert that performance into a win.
Facing an Ivorian team making their tournament debut, Benin seized the opportunity to correct their earlier shortcomings. The breakthrough came ten minutes before the interval, when Evode Oreko capitalised on a handling error by the Ivorian goalkeeper to slot home the opener.
The Squirrels doubled their advantage early in the second half through Aaron Ibilola, whose clinical finish put the match firmly in Benin’s control. Ivory Coast responded through Baba Traoré, who reduced the deficit with a well-taken goal, but it was too little, too late for the Elephants.
The result sees Benin move to second place in Group A, level on three points with Togo, who have played one game fewer. Ivory Coast sit at the bottom of the group with no points from their opening match.
Looking ahead, Benin will enjoy a rest day on April 23, while Ivory Coast will aim to revive their campaign in a must-win encounter against Togo.
