Liverpool have emerged as the front-runners in the race to sign Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, dealing Chelsea a major blow on the final day of the winter transfer window.
The Merseyside club has reportedly reached an agreement with Rennes over a £60 million fee for the French teenager, positioning themselves to complete the high-profile transfer before the window closes.
Chelsea had long held the upper hand on personal terms, with Jacquet reportedly ready to join the Blues earlier this winter. However, negotiations with Rennes stalled over the transfer fee, leaving the London club unable to finalize the deal.
In contrast, Liverpool moved quickly on deadline day to bridge the gap, offering a deal that not only meets Rennes’ valuation but also allows Jacquet to remain on loan at the Ligue 1 side for the rest of the season.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed Liverpool’s emerging advantage, noting that the Anfield club is now “in the box seat” to sign the French defender.
The loan-back arrangement is seen as a strategic move by Liverpool, allowing Jacquet to continue his development at Rennes while securing the signing in advance of next season, as the club pushes for Champions League qualification.
Chelsea’s insistence on immediate arrival appears to have worked against them, as Rennes were reluctant to part with one of their standout talents mid-season. Liverpool’s willingness to accommodate the loan arrangement ultimately gave them the edge in a deal that could reshape both clubs’ defensive plans.
Jacquet, regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young defensive prospects, has impressed in Ligue 1 this season, attracting interest from several top clubs. His versatility, composure on the ball, and defensive acumen make him a prized asset for any team seeking to reinforce their backline.
