Portuguese-Cape Verdean defender Nuno Tavares set for permanent Lazio move after impressive loan spell

Portuguese-Cape Verdean defender Nuno Tavares set for permanent Lazio move after impressive loan spell

Lazio are reportedly prepared to secure the permanent signing of Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares following his loan stint from Arsenal, with discussions said to be underway over a long-term contract that could keep him in Rome until 2029.

Tavares, who joined the Serie A side last summer on a season-long loan from the Premier League club, appears to have made a lasting impression despite an injury disrupted campaign.

Italian media reports suggest that Lazio are now eager to make his stay permanent, activating terms agreed upon during the initial loan arrangement.

The original agreement between Lazio and Arsenal is believed to include a conditional obligation to buy, but the Roman club is now thought to be pushing to finalize the move outright, regardless of those specific triggers.

The Serie A outfit is reportedly ready to offer the 25-year-old a four-year contract, signaling a strong commitment to the defender’s future at the Stadio Olimpico.

Tavares, who began the season with a string of promising performances, has contributed eight assists across 21 league appearances a notable return for a player operating primarily in a defensive role.

His energetic runs, attacking flair, and ability to stretch the field from the left flank added a new dimension to Lazio’s gameplay in the early months of the campaign.

However, the former Benfica player’s momentum was disrupted by a series of injuries that limited his involvement during key stages of the season.

Despite those setbacks, Lazio’s coaching staff and management are said to remain convinced of his potential and value to the squad.

The decision to pursue a permanent transfer highlights the confidence the club has in Tavares’ long-term impact.

While concerns linger over his fitness, the technical team is reportedly satisfied that the full-back’s contributions outweigh the risks.

His adaptability and understanding of Maurizio Sarri’s tactical approach have further strengthened his case for a continued role in the team.

If a deal is finalised, it would effectively end Tavares’ time at Arsenal, where he has struggled to establish himself since joining from Benfica in 2021.

With his future in North London uncertain and first-team opportunities limited under Mikel Arteta, a fresh start in Rome could offer the stability and playing time he needs to fulfil his promise.

For Lazio, locking down a player with Serie A experience and proven attacking output would be a significant move as they look to build on their domestic campaign and compete strongly in Europe next season.

With ambitions to maintain a top-four finish and push further in continental competitions, securing Tavares’ services fits well into the club’s long-term strategy.

As the 2024-25 season approaches its final stretch, negotiations are expected to accelerate. All indications point toward Lazio making a decisive move to tie down one of their most dynamic full-backs permanently — turning a loan gamble into a potentially valuable asset for years to come.
