Portia Boakye joins UNAM Pumas to bring Black Queens experience to Mexico

Ghana international Portia Boakye has joined Mexican top-flight side UNAM Pumas Femenil for the 2026/27 season, adding another chapter to an extensive club career that has taken her across Europe and Africa.

The Black Queens captain completed the move after her spell with DR Congo giants TP Mazembe, where she featured in the CAF Women’s Champions League. Her arrival at Pumas gives the Mexican club an experienced defender as they continue their league campaign.

UNAM Pumas officially announced the signing in the early hours of Thursday, September 24, after Boakye arrived in Mexico earlier this month.

Boakye adds experience to Pumas defence

The 37-year-old brings considerable international and club experience to a Pumas side currently occupying fourth place in Group B of the Mexican league after eight matches.

Boakye has built a career across several leagues, representing clubs including Ostersunds, Trabzon Idmanocagi, Ferencvarosi, Djurgarden and Hapoel Petah Tikva.

Her experience is expected to be particularly valuable at the back as Pumas seek to maintain their position in the upper half of the group and strengthen their push in the ongoing campaign.

The move also marks another opportunity for Boakye to compete at the highest level after her recent African club experience with TP Mazembe.

Black Queens captain arrives after WAFCON

Boakye was part of the Ghana squad that competed at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where the Black Queens reached the quarter-finals.

Ghana’s campaign ended at that stage following a defeat to Malawi, bringing the national team’s tournament run to an end.

The defender now turns her attention back to club football, with her next challenge coming in Mexico.

Mexican debut could come against Atlante

Boakye could make her Pumas debut on September 28 when they take on Atlante in the Mexican league.

She will also become the latest Ghanaian player competing in Mexico, joining Black Queens teammates Grace Asantewaa and Susan Ama Duah.

Her move to Pumas therefore keeps three members of Ghana’s senior women’s national team playing their club football in the Mexican top flight, while giving Boakye a new challenge at the latest stage of her long career.
