Police hold firm to slow Gor Mahia’s title charge after Nyayo stalemate
Defending champions Kenya Police FC delivered a timely blow to Gor Mahia’s march toward the Kenyan Premier League crown, forcing a 1-1 draw that keeps the title race mathematically alive with three rounds remaining.
At Nyayo National Stadium, Police combined organisation and discipline to frustrate the league leaders, striking first through Brian Chonjo in the 22nd minute.
The early breakthrough tilted momentum in favour of the law enforcers, who appeared poised to claim a statement victory before a late intervention from Ebenezer Assifuah salvaged a point for K’Ogalo.
The result leaves Gor Mahia atop the standings on 65 points, maintaining a seven-point cushion over rivals AFC Leopards, albeit having played one match more.
Police remain third with 52 points, but their performance underscored their ability to influence the destination of the title. Gor Mahia now require at least seven points from their final three fixtures to seal a record-extending 22nd league triumph.
Elsewhere, the relegation battle intensified as APS Bomet boosted their survival prospects with a composed 2-0 away win over Mathare United at the Kasarani Annex.
Despite Mathare’s energetic start, including Isaac Omweri’s effort that struck the post, it was APS Bomet who capitalised on defensive uncertainty.
Captain Philip Wasai broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, rewarding a disciplined approach that prioritised structure over possession.
“We understood before kickoff that Mathare would come aggressively because they were also fighting for survival,” Wasai said.
Mathare continued to press after the interval, with coach James Kamau turning to his bench in search of a breakthrough. However, APS Bomet remained resolute and clinically sealed the result when Festus Kipkemoi finished a swift counterattack in the 75th minute.
“We survived difficult moments early in the game, but the players remained organised and trusted the tactical plan,” said coach Sammy Omollo.
The victory lifts APS Bomet to 37 points, easing immediate pressure, while Mathare stay on 35 following another costly outing.
In other fixtures, KCB FC and Bandari FC shared a 2-2 draw, while Kariobangi Sharks and Murang’a SEAL secured narrow wins to round off a decisive weekend in Kenya’s top flight.
