Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has leapt to the defence of striker Nicolas Jackson following increased criticism from Blues supporters over missed chances. Jackson, 22, has scored 7 goals in 17 Premier League appearances since his £32m summer switch from villarreal.
However, with 8 ‘big chances’ spurned, fans expected greater ruthlessness from the Senegal international.
After the 2-1 home defeat by Wolves on Saturday, Jackson acknowledged his fault.
“I should have scored more because I missed a few chances,” he admitted.
“The Premier League is different from La Liga where I come from. I’m trying to adapt. That’s not an excuse.
I continue working hard and listen to the coach who knows football to improve.”
Pochettino steadfastly backed his frontman, insisting Chelsea’s struggles extend beyond individuals.
“He’s a 22-year-old in his debut Premier League season at a club with huge expectations. He needs time to adapt and it’s logical,” stated Pochettino.”
The problem is the team is not playing as expected, so people look for scapegoats.
But we are all failing – not one or two players. They all fail in front of goal and other areas.”
With Chelsea residing in 10th position at the halfway mark, Pochettino called for patience regarding Jackson’s development.
Fans expected the talented striker to instantly fill the goalscoring void left by Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku’s departure last summer.
But at 22, Jackson remains a promising talent adjusting to a different league and style of play.
If Pochettino can coax improved supply to his frontman, Jackson still possesses the pedigree to thrive at Stamford Bridge.
