Saudi sports daily Al-Riyadiyah reported that the management of Abha Club has secured the services of South African coach Pitso Mosimane to lead the team, marking a strategic move to reinvigorate their campaign.

Mosimane assumes the coaching responsibilities, succeeding former coach Youssef Al-Munai, as Abha seeks a resurgence in the Saudi Professional League.

The appointment comes as the players return from their break, coinciding with the Saudi national team’s participation in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.

The report outlines that Abha’s management reached an agreement with Mosimane to commence his coaching duties and oversee training sessions starting this Saturday.

Abha Club is expected to hold a meeting with the new coach to discuss various aspects of the team, including the recruitment of local and foreign players to strengthen and elevate its performance in the Saudi league.

Mosimane, who previously coached Egyptian giants Al Ahly, led Al Ahli Jeddah last season, guiding them back to the top flight from the second division.

He later had a brief stint with UAE’s Al Wahda, which concluded in November last year.

During his tenure with Al Wahda, Mosimane managed the team in 14 matches, securing victory in 8 encounters and suffering 6 losses.

Departing the club in fifth place in the UAE Pro League, Mosimane returns to the managerial scene with Abha.

Abha Club currently occupies the 17th position in the Saudi Professional League standings this season with 14 points.

The appointment of Mosimane, 59, follows his remarkable coaching success with Al Ahly, where he secured consecutive CAF Champions League titles, as well as two bronze finishes in the FIFA Club World Cup.

In 2020, Mosimane guided Al Ahly to victory in the Egyptian Cup and claimed the CAF Super Cup twice.

His wealth of experience and track record make him a significant addition to Abha’s ambitions for a stronger season ahead.
