Pitso Mosimane returns as Bafana Bafana head coach in SAFA appointment

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana, confirming his return to the senior men’s national team for a second permanent spell.

Mosimane, a three-time CAF Champions League winner, takes charge after Hugo Broos ended his five-year tenure with the national side. The Belgian decided not to extend his stay in South Africa, bringing an accomplished period in charge to a close.

Broos first became Bafana Bafana manager in 2021 and leaves having made a significant impact on South African football. The 74-year-old helped restore enthusiasm around the national team and placed a strong emphasis on introducing younger players to the international set-up.

His achievements included leading South Africa to a bronze-medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He also guided Bafana Bafana into the Round of 32 knockout stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a historic accomplishment for the country.

Mosimane now inherits a team facing an immediate test in the qualifying campaign for the 2027 AFCON. South Africa have been placed in Group D alongside Guinea, Eritrea and Kenya, who are co-hosts of the tournament.

Kenya will qualify automatically because of its status as a co-host, leaving Mosimane’s side under considerable pressure to secure their own place in the competition. Bafana Bafana will begin the campaign with consecutive fixtures against Guinea and Eritrea in September.

The appointment represents a return to a role Mosimane has held before, although SAFA’s decision comes with expectations created by the progress made during Broos’ time in charge. His previous success in club football, including three CAF Champions League titles, has made him one of the most decorated coaches associated with South African football.

Mosimane’s immediate priority will be to negotiate a difficult qualifying group and maintain South Africa’s presence at the continent’s leading international tournament. The opening matches against Guinea and Eritrea will provide his first opportunity to establish his plans and begin a new chapter for Bafana Bafana.

Known by the nickname “Jingles”, Mosimane will therefore start his second permanent spell with little time for adjustment. The group’s make-up, combined with Kenya’s automatic qualification, means South Africa must make a strong start if they are to avoid an early setback in the race for the 2027 AFCON.
