Pitso Mosimane poised to guide South Africa after landmark World Cup campaign

Pitso Mosimane has been approved as the next head coach of South Africa, with the South African Football Association expected to confirm his appointment next week.

The national executive committee agreed to bring Mosimane back to lead Bafana Bafana after Hugo Broos left the role last month. The decision was reached during an extraordinary meeting held at the association’s headquarters, according to Africa Soccer.

Mosimane received strong backing from the executive committee as the preferred candidate to succeed Broos, who guided South Africa to the last 32 at the 2026 World Cup before announcing his departure.

South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan said the appointment had been approved in principle, although some final matters still needed to be completed before it could be formally announced.

“The national executive committee has approved the appointment of Mosimane, but we still have some outstanding details to finalise. We will officially announce the matter during the coming week,” Jordaan said.

The decision follows Bafana Bafana’s return from the 2026 World Cup, where they reached the second round for the first time in the country’s history. Their progress at the tournament provided the immediate backdrop to the process of deciding Broos’ successor.

Mosimane is set to take charge of the national team for a second spell, having previously led South Africa. His return would place one of the country’s most experienced coaches in charge of the side following its historic World Cup campaign.

The 61-year-old has built a varied coaching career at domestic and international level. His most prominent appointments have included Al Ahly in Egypt and Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa, while he has also managed Al Ahli Saudi and Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates.

His time with Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly established Mosimane as one of the leading coaches in African football. He is now expected to oversee the next phase of Bafana Bafana’s development after the team’s record progress at the World Cup.

Although the executive committee has agreed to his appointment, the association has not yet made the move official. Jordaan’s comments indicate that the remaining administrative details will be resolved before the confirmation is issued next week.
