Pires backs Beye to unlock English-Nigerian Ethan Nwaneri’s growth at Marseille

Former Arsenal and Olympique Marseille winger Robert Pires believes the appointment of Habib Beye could prove decisive in the development of teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri following a turbulent start to life in France.

Nwaneri arrived at Olympique de Marseille on loan from Arsenal F.C. during the January transfer window seeking valuable senior experience, but the youngster quickly found himself navigating instability after the dismissal of Roberto De Zerbi. The swift managerial transition raised concerns over continuity for the highly rated prospect, yet Pires is convinced the change could ultimately work in the player’s favour.

Speaking to La Provence, the former France international expressed confidence in Nwaneri’s mentality and adaptability despite the disruption.

“It’s not easy for him, but the English aren’t afraid of anything, I’m not worried about him,” Pires said, highlighting the teenager’s resilience as he adjusts to a demanding new football environment away from north London.

Pires also pointed to the presence of familiar linguistic and dressing-room support as key advantages for the Arsenal loanee during the remainder of the campaign.

“He’ll have Mason Greenwood’s support. What’s also good for him is that Habib speaks very good English,” he added, suggesting communication and integration under Beye could accelerate the youngster’s tactical understanding.

The Marseille legend believes the new coach’s influence may arrive at the perfect moment in Nwaneri’s short-term spell. With only three months remaining on his straight loan deal, the emphasis now shifts toward maximising development rather than long-term planning.

“Young Ethan is technically gifted and very incisive. Over the final three months, Habib can contribute something to him,” Pires noted.
