Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is in discussions with Olympique de Marseille over a possible return to Ligue 1, as the veteran Gabonese striker edges closer to an exit from Saudi side Al-Qadsiah.
According to L’Équipe, Marseille’s board has made contact with the 36-year-old forward to explore the possibility of bringing him back to the Stade Vélodrome.
Aubameyang had a standout campaign with OM during the 2023–2024 season, where he scored 30 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions—a bright spark in what was otherwise a difficult period for the French club.
Despite the club’s strong desire to retain him last summer, Aubameyang opted for a move to the Saudi Pro League, joining newly-promoted Al-Qadsiah.
The decision was seen as both a financial and sporting shift in his career, but his goalscoring touch remained intact. In his debut season in Saudi Arabia, he netted 21 goals in 36 matches, proving that age had done little to dull his instincts in front of goal.
However, despite his contributions, Al-Qadsiah now appear ready to part ways with the former Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal striker.
The club’s hierarchy is reportedly seeking a younger and more marketable name to lead their line as they look to strengthen ahead of the new campaign. Aubameyang’s contract still runs until 2026, but reports suggest he may be allowed to leave ahead of schedule.
Earlier this week, Aubameyang was spotted in Saint-Étienne, where he took the opportunity to reconnect with former contacts at Marseille.
That meeting reportedly included informal discussions with senior OM officials, fuelling speculation about a potential homecoming to the club where he last flourished in France.
A return to Marseille would mark a significant moment for both the player and the club. During his brief stint at the Vélodrome, Aubameyang endeared himself to fans with his work ethic, leadership, and prolific scoring.
His goals often came at crucial times, and his influence on and off the pitch earned him admiration from teammates and management alike.
At this stage of his career, a move back to Ligue 1 may also offer Aubameyang the opportunity to conclude his playing days on familiar soil, in a league where he first rose to prominence with Saint-Étienne.
Marseille, re-signing a player of his calibre and experience could provide both firepower and guidance to a younger squad aiming to reassert itself in the French top flight.
While no formal agreement has been reached, the discussions mark a clear indication of mutual interest. The coming weeks will be decisive as both parties weigh their options.
For now, Marseille supporters will be watching closely, hopeful that one of their recent heroes could soon don the white and blue shirt once again.
