Romain Philippoteaux pays tribute to Algerian international Youcef Belaïli and recalls impact of former Brest teammate

French footballer Romain Philippoteaux has spoken warmly about his former teammate Youcef Belaïli, describing the Algerian international as a unique talent who left a lasting impression during their time together at Stade Brestois 29.

Philippoteaux shared his reflections while appearing on the podcast Au Cœur du Jeu, where he took part in a question-and-answer session about the best players he had played with and against during his career.

When asked to name the teammate who had impressed him the most, the former winger immediately pointed to Belaïli, recalling the short but memorable period when the two played together in Brittany.

“I knew him very little, but he played in my position,” Philippoteaux explained at the start of his remarks, referring to the Algerian’s role on the wing.

Although their time together at Brest was brief, the experience clearly left a strong impression on the French player.

Philippoteaux said Belaïli quickly stood out for his personality and the aura surrounding him both on and off the pitch.

He also spoke about the reputation the Algerian forward carried with him, particularly among supporters.

“Everyone in Algeria called him the Algerian Brazilian.”

The nickname, Philippoteaux suggested, reflected Belaïli’s distinctive style of play — a blend of flair, creativity and unpredictability that made him stand out during matches.

The former Brest winger said he soon understood why the forward had earned such a label.

“He’s a guy who lives and breathes football. If he wants to, he’ll make a splash, he’s incredible.”

Beyond his technical ability, Philippoteaux emphasised that Belaïli’s personality also contributed to the positive memories he left among teammates.

“A good guy, a bit nonchalant, but fun to be around. I really, really, really liked him.”

His comments echo a broader perception of Belaïli as a free-spirited footballer whose talent and character often made him a memorable presence in the dressing room.

Although the Algerian international’s spell at Brest was relatively short, Philippoteaux’s recollection highlights how strongly it resonated with those who shared the pitch with him.

For the French winger, Belaïli’s time at the club may have been brief, but the impression he left remains unmistakable.
