Benin must not underestimate Niger, warns former international Philippe Teko
Former Benin international Philippe Teko has warned the Cheetahs against taking Niger lightly as they prepare for an international friendly scheduled for Friday, 5 June 2026, at the Père Jégo Stadium in Morocco.
The former midfielder, who represented several of Benin’s most recognised clubs, including Requins de l’Atlantique, Dragons de l’Ouémé, ASACO de Gbegamey and AS Concorde de Ouidah, believes the encounter offers a significant test despite its status as a friendly during the FIFA international window.
Teko stressed that Niger possess enough quality to cause problems and insisted Benin must approach the match with the same seriousness they would show in a competitive fixture.
“You know the Niger team well. They’re a team that plays very well. They’re not a team to be underestimated. Even though it’s a friendly match during the FIFA window, which doesn’t have major stakes, the Beninese must try to perform well against this team. Because they are a team with quality.”
Drawing on his own experiences with the national side, Teko recalled the challenges Benin faced whenever they came up against their West African neighbours.
“When I was playing for the national team, I played against them. It was a very difficult match for us.”
While the result may not have a direct impact on qualification campaigns or tournament ambitions, Teko believes the fixture carries considerable importance for several players in the current squad, particularly those hoping to establish themselves under head coach Gernot Rohr.
The former international sees the match as an opportunity for recently called-up players to demonstrate their abilities and strengthen their case for future selection.
“For the match on June 6th, our players must show determination, especially the young players who have been called up recently. It’s time to assert themselves, to make their mark, and to show the coach that they truly have value. That’s my personal opinion.”
Teko’s assessment highlights what he views as an often-overlooked aspect of international friendlies. Although Niger may not attract the same attention as some of Africa’s more prominent footballing nations, he believes they possess both the technical ability and collective organisation to challenge any opponent.
For that reason, he argues that Benin’s players must remain focused from start to finish. In his view, the absence of major stakes should not lead to complacency, with discipline, concentration and commitment remaining essential ingredients if the Cheetahs are to produce a convincing performance.
As Benin continue their preparations, Teko’s message is clear: respect the opposition, maintain the right mentality and make the most of an opportunity that could prove valuable for both established players and emerging talents within the squad.
