Pep Guardiola praises Algerian star Rayan Aït-Nouri after impressive Manchester City debut

Pep Guardiola has hailed Rayan Aït-Nouri’s debut performance for Manchester City at the FIFA Club World Cup, praising the Algerian international for his tactical intelligence and positional flexibility in the team’s opening match.

The 23-year-old made his first appearance for City during their Club World Cup fixture, delivering a composed and assured display that caught the attention of his manager.

Guardiola, known for his high tactical standards, was quick to acknowledge Aït-Nouri’s ability to adjust seamlessly within the system, despite it being his maiden outing in City colours.

“Wow, he played very well,” said the Manchester City boss. “We had to defend with four at times, then shift to five, and he adapted right through to the final whistle. It was impressive, especially for someone making their debut.”

The Spanish coach, who has guided City to multiple domestic and European honours, noted that Aït-Nouri’s Premier League experience made the transition smoother.

Although this was his first competitive match with the reigning European champions, the defender’s background with Wolverhampton Wanderers has equipped him with a solid understanding of English football’s pace and intensity.

“He’s already played in the Premier League for several years, and that shows,” Guardiola continued. “He can help us in that important role. Then he moved into midfield, into those tight spaces — and he moves really well.”

Aït-Nouri was utilised in various positions throughout the match, initially operating in a traditional left-back role before shifting into a more central role as the game evolved.

Guardiola highlighted the importance of such versatility in modern football and indicated that the Algerian’s skill set could prove to be a valuable asset in City’s tactical arsenal.

“It’s not easy to ask a player to change structure mid-game, especially in a high-pressure tournament,” Guardiola added. “But Rayan showed intelligence, calmness, and excellent decision-making. These are qualities we value highly.”

Aït-Nouri’s performance arrives at a critical juncture for Manchester City, who are looking to build depth across the pitch amid a congested fixture schedule.

With key players managing fitness concerns and Guardiola often rotating his squad to maintain freshness, Aït-Nouri’s ability to cover multiple roles could see him feature prominently in the coming weeks.

Signed with the expectation of adding both defensive solidity and offensive support from wide areas, Aït-Nouri has long been recognised for his ball-carrying ability, one-on-one defending, and comfort in possession.

His debut with City further underscored those attributes, with Guardiola’s comments signalling a strong start to what could be a fruitful chapter in the player’s career.

As Manchester City continue their Club World Cup campaign, the focus will remain on securing silverware. However, for Aït-Nouri, the immediate reward lies in having earned the trust of one of football’s most demanding managers—on his very first appearance.
