Paul Pogba left on bench explained

Monaco coach Sebastien Pocognoli has outlined why Paul Pogba stayed on the bench during the 2-1 win over Marseille, even though the midfielder finally returned to the matchday squad after five months out.

The Belgian coach stressed that the decision was about rhythm and balance rather than any setback in Pogba’s recovery.

“We are in a good rhythm. He was able to play 20 minutes against Brentford in a friendly during the international break,” Pocognoli told Ligue1+. “As I often repeat, for me, the collective comes first. But if Paul is on the bench today, it is because he can already contribute right now, and even more so in the dressing room.”

With two months of competition remaining, Pocognoli underlined how far Pogba has come in his rehabilitation and praised his attitude. “There are two months of competition left and he has come a long way, but seeing him here today is already very positive, and that is a result of his hard work.”

He also highlighted Pogba’s influence off the pitch. “He was important in the dressing room and in terms of team spirit, so I think he is aware that he has a role to play. My role is to provide him with the best possible environment so he can give us that little bit extra for the end of the season.”

Monaco now head to Paris next week, where Pogba will hope to finally get minutes back on the pitch.
